Introduction
Originally from London, Ontario, I’ve been living in Montreal for the last six years of my life. As an Anglophone living in a French society, I realized quickly that I would need to find a job which would allow me to work primarily in English. While this was originally what prompted me to start working in the web industry, I knew early on that I had found something I was good at, passionate about, and interested in doing for the rest of my life.
Education
I am currently in the final stage of graduation at Concordia University. I have all my required credits and have recently submitted my graduation application. My degree, mostly unrelated to the web industry, is a Major in Political Science with a Minor in Philosophy.
My knowledge of internet technology is completely self taught, with the bulk of my learning coming from books, tutorials, and screencasts. I am always in the process of learning something new and never seem to have enough time to learn everything I’m interested in.
Experience
- June 2009 - February 2010 — Mate1.com Designer, Integrator, and Front-end Developer
-
Mate1.com is an online dating site that boasts over 25 million profiles and over 100, 000 uniques per day. After neglecting their front-end for years, Mate1 finally decided it was time to find a full-time front-end specialist. My day to day tasks at Mate1 included:
- Helping to modernize and update their current site
- Developing a comprehensive HTML and CSS framework for Mate1's up and coming project. This includes heavy use of jQuery, AJAX, and dynamic HTML.
- Creating banners and promotional work
- Designing and Slicing HTML Emails
- 2008 - June 2009 — RedstoneX.com Integrator and Front-End Developer
-
RedstoneX is a fairly well established general web design company based in Montreal. When I started working with Redstone, most of their sites were still being built using tables, static HTML, and spacer GIFs. By the time I left we had started building almost all our sites using pure CSS layouts on top of Wordpress.
Most of the work I did for Redstone involved taking pre-designed PSDs and converting them (as faithfully as possible) into fully functional websites. Although I was definitely involved with the design side of things, most of my time was spent doing HTML, CSS, PHP, Wordpress, and jQuery. The tools I used to make this happen were Photoshop, Coda (my favourite text editor), and Wordpress.
- 2006 - Present — Elementfortytwo Director and Creator of Everything
Elementfortytwo was my main portfolio site and the face of all my personal work. I had been using this site as a place to voice my opinion on relevant design issues, as well as a place to showcase my abilities as a designer. I'm currently in the middle of a redesign (previewed in my featured work), but have recently decided to migrate my online presence over to my new blog/portfolio.
Final Remarks
Thanks for taking the time to look through my resume. If you have any other questions do not hesitate to contact me and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.
I look forward to hearing more about your project.
Kindly,
Emerson
